See where each hour of a shift lands under SCHADS.
Enter a shift, sleepover or broken shift and see its hours split into SCHADS pay items, from ordinary and night to Saturday, public holiday and overtime. It’s built on the SCHADS engine in Diversity Sync’d, and shows hours, never dollars.

A guide to how a shift’s hours are categorised, not pay or legal advice. It applies the award’s disability services and home care rules, shows hours, never dollars, for the one shift you enter, and can’t see the rest of your roster, any enterprise agreement or your pay rates. Check the SCHADS Award and the Fair Work Ombudsman for your obligations.
The rules behind every figure. Each one is read from the SCHADS engine in Diversity Sync’d. They’re the award’s rules for disability services and home care work; social and community services work has its own minimum and overtime bands.
One loading for the whole shift
A weekday shift takes one loading for all its hours, judged on its start and finish: night if it starts before 6am or finishes after midnight, afternoon if it finishes after 8pm.
Weekends and public holidays
Hours on a Saturday, Sunday or public holiday take that day’s pay item, so a shift that crosses midnight is split between its two days.
10 ordinary hours a shift
Past 10 hours, the rest is overtime: the first 2 hours as Overtime, then Overtime+, the disability services and home care bands. Saturday keeps both; Sunday and public holiday overtime are one pay item each.
38 hours a week, 76 a fortnight
Ordinary hours past the pay cycle’s cap become overtime, so the hours already worked this cycle change how the next shift sorts.
Sleepovers
The 8-hour sleep window isn’t worked time. Work either side is pooled at 10 ordinary hours, or 12 by agreement, which Diversity Sync’d applies while neither side runs past 8. Each side takes its own loading.
Call-outs in the night
Work during the sleep window comes out as overtime, with at least 1 hour counted for the night.
Broken shifts
The gap between parts isn’t paid time, and both parts share the 10-hour limit. Hours worked more than 12 hours after the first part started go to Overtime+. The broken shift allowance isn’t hours, so it isn’t shown.
Unpaid breaks
Breaks come off the worked hours, never off a sleep window, so a sleepover’s break shortens the work either side of the night.
Short shifts flagged
A shift under the 2-hour minimum payment for part-time and casual staff is flagged, and so is each part of a broken shift that runs under 2 hours. So is a sleepover without 4 hours of work beside it, or one that ends before its window closes.
One shift here. Every shift in the app. The checker sorts the shift you type. Diversity Sync’d sorts every approved timesheet in the pay cycle, then sends the hours to Xero AU Payroll for your pay rates to price.
This checker
One shift at a time
- One shift, broken shift or sleepover night

- The public holiday you tick
- A week with no daylight-saving change
- Hours by pay item, with nothing saved or sent

No. It’s a guide to how a shift’s hours are categorised under SCHADS, built on the SCHADS engine in Diversity Sync’d. It isn’t pay or legal advice, and it can’t see the rest of your roster, any enterprise agreement or your pay rates. Check the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award and the Fair Work Ombudsman for your obligations.
No. It shows hours by pay item, never dollars, as Diversity Sync’d does. In the app, those hours go to Xero AU Payroll, where your pay rates work out the pay.
It’s built on a copy of the SCHADS engine in Diversity Sync’d and builds your shift the way timesheets build one. The checker and the app are updated separately, so for a while after an update the two can sort a shift differently. The checker also sees less: one shift, in a week with no daylight-saving change, with the public holiday and earlier hours you enter.
It applies the award’s rules for disability services and home care work: a 2-hour minimum payment for part-time and casual staff, for each shift or each part of a broken shift, and 2 hours of overtime as Overtime before Overtime+. Social and community services work, which can include residential child safety roles, has a 3-hour minimum payment instead, and full-time staff there and in crisis accommodation get 3 hours of overtime at time and a half before double time. The checker doesn’t apply those rules, so check that work against the award.
A weekday shift takes one loading for all its hours, judged on when it starts and finishes. A shift that finishes after 8pm, up to midnight, is afternoon. One that finishes after midnight or starts before 6am is night. Saturday, Sunday and public holiday hours take their day’s pay item instead.
The 8-hour sleep window, from the time you set, isn’t counted as worked hours. Work before and after it is pooled, with ordinary hours capped at 10 and anything past that as overtime, and each side takes its own loading. Sleepover allowances aren’t hours, so they aren’t shown here; in Diversity Sync’d they’re added automatically.
It stands for an agreement to pool the work either side of the night at 12 ordinary hours rather than 10. Diversity Sync’d applies it only while neither side of the night runs past 8 worked hours. If one does, the night is sorted as if there were no agreement.
Two parts of work on the same day with an unpaid gap between them. The engine treats them as one engagement: the gap isn’t paid, the 10-hour limit covers both parts, and hours worked more than 12 hours after the first part started go to Overtime+. For part-time and casual staff, the 2-hour minimum payment applies to each part, and the checker notes a part that runs shorter. The broken shift allowance is paid per shift, not per hour, so it isn’t shown here.
The engine caps ordinary hours at 38 a week, or 76 over a fortnightly cycle. Enter the ordinary hours already worked in the cycle, leaving out overtime, and any of this shift’s hours past the cap come out as overtime.
Overtime is the first 2 hours of overtime in a shift, the band the award sets for disability services and home care work. Overtime+ is the overtime after that, and any hours worked past a broken shift’s 12-hour span. Saturday has both bands, as Saturday overtime and Saturday overtime+. Sunday and public holiday overtime each go to one pay item, whichever band they fall in.
